Recent studies show that 95% of dieters regain the weight they lost and more often than not end up heavier than when they started. What do the 5% who lose weight and keep it off know that the others don't?

Get to the gym, Walk, Run, Jog, Hike, Yoga, do P90X, Insanity, TurboFire, etc..., check out a "Free" local "Fit Club" (Like Sirius Fitness Fit Club if you are in San Diego) We Want All of our folks to do the 30/40/50 Challenge~> 30 pushups...40 squats...50 crunches...If you do this every day I guarantee you in 30 days you will notice a difference.

Sirius Fitness held it’s 2nd Annual “Rebirth in Wellness” Holistic Health and Fitness Expo, which took place at Malcolm X Library and Performing Arts Center on Saturday August 6th from 10-1pm. This event’s main purpose was to enlighten the participants of the importance of Healthy Nutrition and Exercise as a precursor to optimum health.

Injuries suck!

Yes! Injuries Suck! I pushed my body last Month and it came to a screeching halt! Well...I've been coping with Achilles tendonitis and when I checked it out on the web this is what it said:

"The Achilles tendon attaches the heel to the calf muscle. This is a common injury for runners, tennis players, cyclists, rollerbladers and high heel wearers, among others. Stretching the foot, calf and hamstrings can help alleviate this injury. In some cases, you may need to stop exercising for a few days. Ice is a good remedy but avoid stretching or strengthening exercises that put pressure on the heel." ~Debbie Hickey
"...stop exercising for a few days" ???? HUH?, WHAT? "Well...I have classes to teach...a 1/2 Marathon to get ready for...I have had trouble sitting still and resting...but, finally finally, finally... I finally came to realization that if I just sat my butt down and rested my foot then it would get better and heal. I think this is common problem among "fitness" professionals, "fitness" enthusiasts and "fitness" fanatics! We know we should rest but that "darn" bug just keeps biting us and instead of ignoring that 6:30 TKB class, you find yourself in the front row jumping, burpee-ing and "jab-cross-hook-upper cutting" yourself to further injury. Sigh!

I have still worked out, but (contrary to what others around me think) I have taken it easy and now I'm on the verge of being fully healed. All this is to say...please when you are injured make sure you rest and find some other means to occupy your "intense" fitness regimen (other than "Depressed-That-I-Cant-Workout" eating<
~ whisper**I did a little of that**) I'm happy I actually stayed away from some intense classes and intense workouts (ie...Insanity Asylum) because I cannot afford to be out "of the game" for an extended period of time!

What is Michi's Ladder? <~ CLICK...

You wanna lose weight and get more fit for the Summer...for Yourself...for Your Husband/Wife...for Your HEALTH?? Well...you can use Michi's Ladder as a food substitution guide to assist you in making Healthy eating choices. There are five (5) tiers of foods, One (1) and two (2) being the highest and "Best" food choices and three (3) to five (5) the lowest and "not-so-good" choices. It's simple...Eat mostly from the first two tiers and sparingly (or not at all) from the last three tiers and OF COURSE add Fitness and Exercise to the mix!

If you focus on Michi's substitution guide, eat 5-6 small, balanced and clean (free of too many preservatives) meals a day and combine it with 5-6 days of exercise you will headed closer to the goal of "a Healthier and Fit YOU!"

Personally, I am beginning this lifestyle change in May (May 2nd to be exact) and I plan to check out my results in June! I already eat well and exercise, but sometimes you get stuck on plateaus and you need that extra Kick in the Butt to get you off that plateau. (In this case I'm using a ladder) Join me as I climb Michi's Ladder as my nutritionist and Shaun T as my trainer! Laughter is good for the soul!

“Your sense of humor is one of the most powerful tools you have to make certain that your daily mood and emotional state support good health.” ~ Paul E. McGhee, Ph.D.

  1. Laughter relaxes the whole body. A good, hearty laugh relieves physical tension and stress, leaving your muscles relaxed for up to 45 minutes after.
  2. Laughter boosts the immune system. Laughter decreases stress hormones and increases immune cells and infection-fighting antibodies, thus improving your resistance to disease.
  3. Laughter triggers the release of endorphins, the body’s natural feel-good chemicals. Endorphins promote an overall sense of well-being and can even temporarily relieve pain.
  4. Laughter protects the heart. Laughter improves the function of blood vessels and increases blood flow, which can help protect you against a heart attack and other cardiovascular problems.

We got OUR "laugh on" at the Pechanga Comedy Club in Temecula, CA, as we saw Comedian Legend ("King of Clean Comedy)...AJ Jamal and up and coming Actor/Comedian, Brandon T Jackson (seen in Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief, Big Momma 3 and Fast & Furious.)

Finishing Chelsea's Run was inspiring!

I'm so glad my family went to and Finished... The Inaugural 'Finish Chelsea's Run' this past Saturday March 5th (2011). It was great to witness the outpouring of love for this young girl who was taken from her family and friends far too early. Chelsea was a Poway High School senior, who disappeared while jogging on the trails in Rancho Bernardo. There were close to 5000 runners/walkers and supporters out in Balboa Park (San Diego) and it was so heart warming to see them all there for the same cause! It was obvious that Chelsea touched many lives and inspired many people. It is sad that she had to lose her life to make an impact.

I usually go to these run events on my own, but this time I brought the whole family to witness what I thought would be a special event in the community. As an adult I knew why I was there and what it represented, but it was wonderful seeing my five year old drawing hearts (as well as Spiderman) on the "Inspiration Wall" created for Chelsea's memory. It was an honor to be there as a family as my wife and I celebrated our anniversary at this "family" event.
(My wife, Makena even got interviewed at the event~> She's the one with the big afro...Lol!)

View more videos at: http://www.nbcsandiego.com.

Well...we look forward to celebrating Chelsea's life next year and we hope to bring many more people along with us to witness this great event honoring a person taken away Way too soon! R.I.P. Chelsea!

"Blood Type Diet" or Vegan?

Well, the last almost 30 days I've been Vegan and loving it. (except for some extra gas from soy...gotta cut back on that! Lol!) Now I've re-discovered the "Blood Type Diet" and in my case, it makes sense! I read the book a long time ago but I didn't really adopt the practices of the diet, but I really feel that I should at least try and see if adopting it makes a difference. Now according to the diet, since I'm a Type O...

"More than any other blood type, O’s rely on physical exercise to maintain physical health and emotional balance. Dr. D’Adamo suggests that Type O’s engage in regular physical activity three to four times per week. For best results, engage in aerobic activity for thirty to forty five minutes at least four times per week. If you are easily bored, choose two or three different exercises and vary your routine."

Now does that sound like me?? Heck yes! Also, they go on to say...

"To avoid becoming overstressed, Dr. D’Adamo recommends following the Type O diet, which focuses on lean, organic meats, vegetables and fruits and avoid wheat and dairy which can be triggers for digestive and health issues in Type O. Additionally, he suggests that Type O’s avoid caffeine and alcohol."

Now, I can do that, except I want to stay away from the meats, organic or not! (I'll go back to my salmon and tilapia if I need to) Now...I'm over dairy and wheat (bread especially...I will miss wheat pasta) and I don't drink alcohol or coffee, so I can handle that. It also says I can still eat my Quinoa (Complete Vegan Protein) so I can still practice Veganism most of the time! I was worried about fish because I have considered eating some fish every once in awhile, but they answered my question...

"...a diet rich in saltwater fish and kelp to help regulate the thyroid gland..."

So...I'm going to still stay vegan until I do a little more research on this. Anyone out there with any experience with this diet or any suggestions, it would be greatly appreciated!

Come take a Hike...up Cowles Mt.

"Hey, you wanna hike Cowles Mt. this weekend?", "Heck NO! I ain't climbing no mountain. That's for those crazy folks!" That is usually the response I get from people when I ask the to join me on Cowles Mt. "What is Cowles Mt. and why should I climb it?" is another question I get from folks who never tried it. Well... Cowles Mt. is a Mountain in San Diego, located on the corner of Golfcrest Drive and Navajo Road, within Mission Mission Trails Park. It is 1.5 miles up and 1.5 miles down (giving you a roundtrip journey of 3 miles). Why do we do it? We do it for the challenge, for fitness, to clear our minds, to inspire us to achieve goals, for dares, to impress girls or guys, for fun...the list of reasons go on and on.
Many groups, clubs, teams, individuals, etc... make the trek every day (some twice in one day!) and continue to do it for their individual reasons. My group, Sirius Fitness Run and Fit Club make it a habit to hike at least once a week. I personally am doing it to prepare for a Half Marathon which requires me to run much of those grueling 13.1 miles uphill! I encourage individuals to do it for their overall health. That is my driving force! When commenting on their journey up and down Cowles Mt. some members used descriptions such as... hard, fun, inspiring, invigorating, challenging, refreshing, great and some I can't mention...LOL! Yolanda K. said, "Wow! my calves hurt for almost a week after the first workout.. whoa!!" We get a GOOD WORKOUT too!

My challenge to you is to come and challenge YOURSELF and reach that peak, climb that mountain, conquer that hill and keep your eye on the prize. The prize is Health, Wellness and an Optimum Life! We take on Cowles every Saturday Morning at 7am. For more information go to www.meetup.com/siriusfitness (join our FREE Fit club) or email me at siriusfitness@gmail.com. PEACE and HEALTH!

Soy-Free Vegan Mac n' Cheese Recipe | HappyHerbivore.com

I found my frozen yogurt replacement! (I think!)

Oh My Goodness! During this Vegan diet I have discovered new non-dairy, non-egg, non-animal protein alternatives which are healthy and tasty as well! Today I was walking through Vons just looking for alternatives to my frozen yogurt craving and I found Almond Dream Bites! YUMMY! I have had a hard time in the past finding an alternative to Ice Cream and Frozen yogurt, but I think I finally found it! Try it...You'll love it! The next on the agenda is the Soy Dream Frozen Dessert! I hope I can replace my yogurt with it, because I really want to continue with my dairy free lifestyle!
