The incredible day started with an opening greeting and a quick overview of the mission of the event before introducing the first presenter. The presenters included: Raw Food Chef, Joan Jackson, who spoke about the health benefits of a Raw Food diet, Mark Jones, Fitness Professional, who provided Holistic nutritional information, Auset Price, natural hair stylist and owner of ‘Hair Esteem Internatural’, who spoke about the importance of “Natural Healthy Hair” and Tiffany Janay, co-owner of Organic Blood, who spoke about her personal journey to Holistic Wellness. The fitness lineup consisted of ZUMBA, OneFitJam! and Sirius Fitness Boot Camp wrapping up the day of wellness! There were also health and wellness vendors giving out “free” information and products.
The audience was very engaged with the presenters as they lectured on the various subjects, asking questions and participating in the discussions. The presenters also brought healthy foods to sample, showed informative power point presentations and videos and gave “heart-felt” personal testimonies that seemed to “move” the attendees. Tracy Gillum-Willis commented about this being an “informative event” and “...great stuff!”, Jamaica Jacobson said, "I had a great time. I loved all the free info and recipe books. I'm going to encourage my friends to come with me next time." while Tammie West-Ramsom stated, “I’m a winner, because I am here soaking in all this free education.”
Now, regarding fitness! Mark Jones and OneFitJam! Got the crowd moving and hearts pumping with aerobic moves, while Gema Diaz got everyone rocking with ZUMBA Fitness! The event wrapped up with Nasara Gargonnu and Debra Portee of Sirius Fitness Run and Fit Club giving the crowd a taste of their unique Boot Camp! The crowd’s mind and body was stimulated as the event ended and they were told to “Save the Date” for the next Holistic Fair taking place on November 5th.

"The Achilles tendon attaches the heel to the calf muscle. This is a common injury for runners, tennis players, cyclists, rollerbladers and high heel wearers, among others. Stretching the foot, calf and hamstrings can help alleviate this injury. In some cases, you may need to stop exercising for a few days. Ice is a good remedy but avoid stretching or strengthening exercises that put pressure on the heel." ~Debbie Hickey"...stop exercising for a few days" ???? HUH?, WHAT? "Well...I have classes to teach...a 1/2 Marathon to get ready for...I have had trouble sitting still and resting...but, finally finally, finally... I finally came to realization that if I just sat my butt down and rested my foot then it would get better and heal. I think this is common problem among "fitness" professionals, "fitness" enthusiasts and "fitness" fanatics! We know we should rest but that "darn" bug just keeps biting us and instead of ignoring that 6:30 TKB class, you find yourself in the front row jumping, burpee-ing and "jab-cross-hook-upper cutting" yourself to further injury. Sigh!
I have still worked out, but (contrary to what others around me think) I have taken it easy and now I'm on the verge of being fully healed. All this is to say...please when you are injured make sure you rest and find some other means to occupy your "intense" fitness regimen (other than "Depressed-That-I-Cant-Workout" eating<~ whisper**I did a little of that**) I'm happy I actually stayed away from some intense classes and intense workouts (ie...Insanity Asylum) because I cannot afford to be out "of the game" for an extended period of time!

“Your sense of humor is one of the most powerful tools you have to make certain that your daily mood and emotional state support good health.” ~ Paul E. McGhee, Ph.D.
- Laughter relaxes the whole body. A good, hearty laugh relieves physical tension and stress, leaving your muscles relaxed for up to 45 minutes after.
- Laughter boosts the immune system. Laughter decreases stress hormones and increases immune cells and infection-fighting antibodies, thus improving your resistance to disease.
- Laughter triggers the release of endorphins, the body’s natural feel-good chemicals. Endorphins promote an overall sense of well-being and can even temporarily relieve pain.
- Laughter protects the heart. Laughter improves the function of blood vessels and increases blood flow, which can help protect you against a heart attack and other cardiovascular problems.

I usually go to these run events on my own, but this time I brought the whole family to witness what I thought would be a special event in the community. As an adult I knew why I was there and what it represented, but it was wonderful seeing my five year old drawing hearts (as well as Spiderman) on the "Inspiration Wall" created for Chelsea's memory. It was an honor to be there as a family as my wife and I celebrated our anniversary at this "family" event.
(My wife, Makena even got interviewed at the event~> She's the one with the big afro...Lol!)
View more videos at: http://www.nbcsandiego.com.
Well...we look forward to celebrating Chelsea's life next year and we hope to bring many more people along with us to witness this great event honoring a person taken away Way too soon! R.I.P. Chelsea!

Well, the last almost 30 days I've been Vegan and loving it. (except for some extra gas from soy...gotta cut back on that! Lol!) Now I've re-discovered the "Blood Type Diet" and in my case, it makes sense! I read the book a long time ago but I didn't really adopt the practices of the diet, but I really feel that I should at least try and see if adopting it makes a difference. Now according to the diet, since I'm a Type O...
"More than any other blood type, O’s rely on physical exercise to maintain physical health and emotional balance. Dr. D’Adamo suggests that Type O’s engage in regular physical activity three to four times per week. For best results, engage in aerobic activity for thirty to forty five minutes at least four times per week. If you are easily bored, choose two or three different exercises and vary your routine."
Now does that sound like me?? Heck yes! Also, they go on to say...
"To avoid becoming overstressed, Dr. D’Adamo recommends following the Type O diet, which focuses on lean, organic meats, vegetables and fruits and avoid wheat and dairy which can be triggers for digestive and health issues in Type O. Additionally, he suggests that Type O’s avoid caffeine and alcohol."
Now, I can do that, except I want to stay away from the meats, organic or not! (I'll go back to my salmon and tilapia if I need to) Now...I'm over dairy and wheat (bread especially...I will miss wheat pasta) and I don't drink alcohol or coffee, so I can handle that. It also says I can still eat my Quinoa (Complete Vegan Protein) so I can still practice Veganism most of the time! I was worried about fish because I have considered eating some fish every once in awhile, but they answered my question...
"...a diet rich in saltwater fish and kelp to help regulate the thyroid gland..."
So...I'm going to still stay vegan until I do a little more research on this. Anyone out there with any experience with this diet or any suggestions, it would be greatly appreciated!

I still am having some problems with soy. I love the taste, I love the Health benefits, but it has been giving me too much gas! ;-D I don't drink soymilk (I drink Almond Milk...YUM!), but I do have the veggie "meat" and I have been eating a lot of it lately! (I probably just need to cut down on my intake)

Many groups, clubs, teams, individuals, etc... make the trek every day (some twice in one day!) and continue to do it for their individual reasons. My group, Sirius Fitness Run and Fit Club make it a habit to hike at least once a week. I personally am doing it to prepare for a Half Marathon which requires me to run much of those grueling 13.1 miles uphill! I encourage individuals to do it for their overall health. That is my driving force! When commenting on their journey up and down Cowles Mt. some members used descriptions such as... hard, fun, inspiring, invigorating, challenging, refreshing, great and some I can't mention...LOL! Yolanda K. said, "Wow! my calves hurt for almost a week after the first workout.. whoa!!" We get a GOOD WORKOUT too!
My challenge to you is to come and challenge YOURSELF and reach that peak, climb that mountain, conquer that hill and keep your eye on the prize. The prize is Health, Wellness and an Optimum Life! We take on Cowles every Saturday Morning at 7am. For more information go to www.meetup.com/siriusfitness (join our FREE Fit club) or email me at firstname.lastname@example.org. PEACE and HEALTH!

Well folks...I've been eating clean (no dairy, sugar, salt, fish, etc...) for the last 14 days. I have one more week to go! (Pray for me) Only salads, fruits, water, veggie meat, quinoa<~(that grain has all the essential amino acids for muscle building!) nuts, grains, etc... have been in my system and I have to tell you...I FEEL GREAT! I still have energy, I still am able to run around town and through the gyms like a madman, teaching my classes, taking classes and doing my "fitness" thing! I have only been a Lacto-Ovo-Pesco Vegetarian and it feels great being a Vegan, even if it is just for the month. But, I have been really feeling that I can incorporate this vegan diet for part of the week, while going back to my fish (mostly salmon) the rest of the week. I have lost bodyfat, a little weight and I have loads of energy!
