Sirius Fitness presents... The Invisible Vegan

**On the 4 Year Anniversary of "Sirius Fitness Day" in San Diego we presented the The Invisible Vegan...

On Sunday December 15th, Sirius Fitness, in conjunction with Live Well San Diego presented the documentary, The Invisible Vegan at Jackie Robinson Family YMCA. The Documentary was followed by a Panel of Nutritional Experts and an incredible Vegan meal.

What is the "Invisible Vegan"?

"The Invisible Vegan is a 90-minute independent documentary that explores the problem of unhealthy dietary patterns in the African-American community, foregrounding the health and wellness possibilities enabled by plant-based vegan diets and lifestyle choices."

This documentary was Co-Produced by Jasmine and Kenny Leyva and featured prominent celebrities such as Stic Man from Dead Prez, Comedian Cedric the Entertainer and NBA Champion John Salley. The documentary dealt with misconceptions, health benefits, history and more about Plant-Based diets in the African-American community.

The Panel consisted of David Engel of Plant DiegoVegan Martial Artist, Charles Scot and was facilitated by Dr. Samira Jones (aka Dr. Sunshine Jones). They answered questions about their own personal journeys with a Plant-based diet, the effects, the challenges and overall general information. Dr. Jones was very informative with her background in Nutrition. The audience provided great questions for the panel that added much more to the discussion.

The event concluded with an awesome Vegan meal consisting of Salad, Pasta w/ Vegan Sausage, Quinoa Salad and delicious Vegan Chocolate Chip cookies. Thank you Morse High School Culinary Department for providing the meal and thank you to our Sponsors for this event, Stepping Higher, Inc., Fit, Black and Educated and Plant Diego.

The 90-minute documentary is available to watch online through Amazon Prime and Vimeo.

2017 Rebirth In Wellness: Holistic Health and Fitness fair...REBIRTH!

On January 28th, 2017 at City of Hope International, Sirius Fitness in conjunction with A Healthier Me’, held the 2017 ‘Rebirth In Wellness’ event, which is a Holistic Health and Fitness fair created by the owner of Sirius Fitness, Nasara Gargonnu in 2008. This event provides the community a free showcase of Health and Fitness Professionals sharing their wealth of knowledge through short lectures and fitness demonstrations. There were also numerous Wellness vendors with products and services.

This year there was a impressive group of individuals taking part in this event. The event kicked off with Nasara moving the crowd with his signature Sirius Fitness warmup and then explaining that ‘Rebirth in Wellness’ was created to spread Health and Fitness to the Southeast community. He felt strongly about this due to the fact that the community was at risk for preventable health risks and diseases that could be remedied through proper knowledge and preventive care. Nasara also explained that he lost his father at an early age from Prostate cancer and that his goal is to make sure he live a lifestyle that allows him to be around for his own children. Dr. Suzanne Afflalo, the retired Kaiser doctor and mastermind behind the ‘A Healthier Me’ program, spoke about preventative care as a  means to combat disease. She was followed by Hajar Young who spoke about stress management through breathing, meditation and essential oils. Author of The Well: Where Fitness Begins Within, Sahsha Campbell-Garbutt, wrapped up by the lectures speaking about How a fit mind leads to a fit body!

The fitness portion kicked off with Trena Bennett, creator of ‘GospelCise Fitness’ leading a heavenly inspired fitness routine that got the crowd motivated. Nasara & Moriah of Sirius Fitness followed with some fitness moves and dance fitness that kept the “party” going. Makena wrapped up the fitness with a ‘Dance it Out’ routine that brought the crowd together with a unifying dance.

In addition to the knowledge of Health and Fitness, the participants also received awesome raffle items, drinks, healthy food and a tasty cooking demonstration! If you want any more information about future events from Sirius Fitness you can contact Nasara at siriusfitness@gmail.com of follow him on Facebook at Coach Nasara Gargonnu and Sirius Fitness Run and Fit Club.

Are YOU ready to make a CHANGE?

Join me, Nasara Gargonnu, on my quest to get San Diego (and the World) moving in a "Healthy Direction!" I am a Father, Husband, Trainer, Group Exercise Instructor and Physical Education Teacher and I figured out that my PURPOSE is to spread the knowledge of Health, Fitness and OVERALL Wellness to everyone willing to listen (and even those who don't...lol!) I lost my father at the YOUNG age of 55 and I believe that many of us can prevent premature death and illnesses by "Eating Clean" (Cutting the preservatives, sugars and processed foods down to a minimum, eating REAL foods....Veggies, Fruits, Lean meats, etc...) a little exercise and Positive Thinking! It's an easy concept, but if we haven't been doing it in 20-30+ years or we have not been introduced to this lifestyle, it may be difficult.

In the upcoming days and weeks I will be posting about my Health and Wellness in abundance because I feel it is a LIFE OR DEATH priority! Please keep your eyes open and follow me THIS blog, on my Facebook "Coach" page and even my personal page!

"I'm ready to make a CHANGE for the better because I have to LIVE for my family...what about YOU?"

7 Sirius Fitness Tips for Running the Costume Party Run Half Marathon (This Sunday)

7 Sirius Fitness Tips for Running the Costume Party Run Half Marathon (This Sunday)

1-  Eat the Big meal at lunch rather than dinner...I learned this the hard way when I ate Heavy the night (7pm) before a race and "FELT IT" the next morning...not fun! You don't have to Carb Load, just eat a balanced "clean" meal...PIG OUT AFTER THE RACE! lol!

2- Get there early...I try to get there at least an hour before the start of the race. It's not cool to get there in rush mode just to have to get running within 10 minutes with no warming up, mental preparation or time for that "last minute" potty break.

3- Hydrate...Hydrate...Hydrate! Don't wait for the day of the race to start....drink more than your average a couple days prior to the race and (if you want) carry water in a hydration belt and if you don't like those (which I don't) make sure you drink water a EVERY water stop.

4- Pre-Race Fueling... Personally I drink a Verve (Healthy Energy Drink) prior to the race and/ or a 1/4 of a banana or some Gatorade "like" drink.

5- "In-race" fueling... Try an Island Boost "shot"...less sticky and chalky than "goo" and it is assists with a quick burst of energy from a "tasty" mixture of glucose, coconut water and Healthy "stuff"! I take mine at mile 7, 9 and 11 (if needed)

6- "Keep your eye on the prize" and...Remember your "WHY"...Why are you doing this? Think of the accomplishment...Goal...all the training...the cause...THE BLING! lol!

7- Afterwards we EAT for our ACCOMPLISHMENTS! (at 1pm~ Wear your Medal)  Sushi Deli 1 ~ 228 W. Washington St., San Diego CA 92103

If we don't change now or at least be open to change we will continue to suffer from the "Dis-Ease" that plagues our communities! We owe it to ourselves and our Children! This is stop number one on the Sirius Fitness Health Tour in 2013! Thank you to The Valencia Park/Malcolm X Library, Network for a Healthy California-San Diego & Imperial Counties and PBS’s Community Cinema for presenting the film “Soul Food Junkies” on Wednesday January 9th at 6:00 pm. #RunNasaraRun: Let's run the...2012 San Diego Rock n Roll Half Marathon!

Ok...ok...ok... Firstly I want to thank First Lady Benson and Stepping Higher, Inc. for sponsoring my run and constantly supporting me in my quest for wellness in our communities! Now...let's talk about this run. Well...the day before (June 2nd) I organized, with the sponsorship and assistance of ING Kids Rock (also...a special shoutout goes to John Nunn, a 2012 Olympic hopeful in the 50K race walk, for his assistance.) We took students from Nubia Leadership Academy out to get fit and experience the fun and excitement of an organized, (semi) competitive run (kids were involved, so they are no losers, only winners!) This was fun and a little stressful but mostly fun!

After the kids run, we went to the annual Expo in the downtown Convention Center and it was GREAT as usual! Vendors, vendors and more vendors and I had to also pick up my racing bib. I was also "given" a $30-40 parking pass "out of the blue" and that was a blessing because it allowed me to park at the "finish line"(Sea World) before the race began.

Now, the morning was a little challenging because I was looking for my shorts at 4 am and couldn't find them. I found some cool red shorts, but they didn't match so I went with my black shorts which happened to be missing the drawstring. I didn't think it was a problem because I had safety pins to hold them up...BOY...THAT CAME BACK TO HAUNT ME!!

We started the race in Hillcrest along with the other 40,000 runners and proceed to trek 13.1 miles to Sea World...yay! ;-/ I had recently sprained my calf muscle that week in TKB, but I couldn't back out because I had to "do what I gotta do"...right? Well, I was cool for the first 4 miles, then Mr. Calf started acting up. Now, I'm foolish sometimes and I deal with the pain, but believe it or not, that wasn't the worst of it...the worst came when I had to constantly pull my shorts up FOR THE WHOLE RACE! Stupid, stupid, stupid!! I should have just wore the non-matching red shorts and ran a comfortable race, but noooooooooo...I have to match and it cost me my sub-2:00 time! I ended up running it in 2:05 (not bad, but those shorts messed me up...Lol!) Other than the "wardrobe malfunction" the race was great, the course was great the music...the music...the music?? It wasn't my "cup of tea" so of course I had my headphones on the whole time (Thank you Snuggbuds) Oh, yeah...there was that ONE group playing "California Love" by Dr. Dre and 2Pac which got me HYPE right when I was passing the Mission Valley YMCA.

Overall it was a great time and I look forward to the 2 month break before my next Half Marathon. We will be attempting to kick butt in the Vista Half Marathon (formerly the Big Money Half) on August 11th and then the America's Finest City Half on August 19th! Wish us luck!

PS: Thank you Mr. Tracy Morris and the Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. Western Region and Nubia Leadership Academy for sponsoring me for these runs!

Also...Please it is not too late to donate towards the ~> "Dash for Dad" run to benefit Prostate Cancer research. (Anything is helpful)  I'll be running in December 2012 at the Rock n Roll Half in Vegas for this cause which has personally affected me, with my father passing at the young age of 55, and knowing that it affects countless lives across this planet!

"What a Feeling!"

Great feeling: "I love walking into a Fitness class I have to sub and people looking at me like I'm a leper, but 60 minutes later they are asking for my business card!"
